Some came for the first time, others were already doing business here. But whether they were new or experienced, I noticed something in common:</p><p>&#128073; <strong>There are still a lot of misunderstandings about how Chinese factories actually work.</strong><br>Not just small things &#8212; but big, relationship-shaping assumptions that often lead to frustration on both sides.</p><p>Here are five I see the most &#8212; and a few real stories from the factory floors.</p><div><hr></div><h3>1. &#8220;Cheaper = Better&#8221;</h3><p>This one comes up <em>a lot</em>. Buyers show up thinking the lowest price wins. It doesn&#8217;t.</p><p>&#128205; A few months ago, a buyer showed me a quotation from another supplier &#8212; $1.05 per unit. My factory friend had quoted $1.30. &#8220;Can you match it?&#8221; the buyer asked. The answer was no &#8212; because that $1.30 included better raw materials, environmental testing, and a proper warranty. The cheaper factory skipped all of that.</p><p>Fast forward 2 months: the cheaper batch failed testing in Europe. They lost their first retailer deal.</p><p>&#128161; <strong>In manufacturing, &#8220;cheap&#8221; can become very expensive later.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3>2. &#8220;Factories Are Eager for Any Order&#8221;</h3><p>This used to be true 15 years ago. But not anymore. Good factories are busy &#8212; and picky.</p><p>&#128205; I know a fashion accessories factory in Dongyang that recently rejected a 12,000-unit order. Why? The buyer kept changing specs, never sent a final sample, and disappeared for 10 days after the contract draft. &#8220;If they&#8217;re this disorganized now,&#8221; the factory owner told me, &#8220;imagine what happens during production.&#8221;</p><p>Factories are under pressure too &#8212; from labor shortages, rising material costs, and even platform penalties. They&#8217;re looking for <em>stable</em>, respectful partners &#8212; not just any business.</p><p>&#128161; <strong>You&#8217;re not the only one doing due diligence. So is the factory.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3>3. &#8220;If Their English Isn&#8217;t Great, They&#8217;re Unprofessional&#8221;</h3><p>Oof. I&#8217;ve seen this happen more than once &#8212; a buyer walks away just because the factory rep is using awkward Google Translate phrases.</p><p>&#128205; But here&#8217;s the thing: some of the most brilliant production minds I&#8217;ve met barely speak English. One tooling engineer I know in Ningbo helped reverse-engineer a component for a major Swiss brand &#8212; just by looking at a photo. But he sends messages like &#8220;we make good product, trust me.&#8221; That doesn&#8217;t mean he&#8217;s clueless &#8212; it just means he&#8217;s focused on machines, not grammar.</p><p>&#128161; <strong>Language is a tool, not a reflection of ability. Ask better questions. Use more diagrams. Stay patient.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3>4. &#8220;Production Should Be Fast. That&#8217;s What China Is Known For.&#8221;</h3><p>Yes, China is efficient &#8212; but it still takes <em>time</em> to make good things.</p><p>&#128205; A founder I met wanted custom packaging, pantone-matched inks, and three SKU variations &#8212; in under 18 days. That&#8217;s not how production works. Dyes need time to settle. Materials need to be ordered. Machines have queues. And workers need to rest.</p><p>Fast doesn&#8217;t mean careless. But when buyers rush too hard, factories often feel forced to cut corners. And the product suffers.</p><p>&#128161; <strong>Speed is not about pressure &#8212; it&#8217;s about process clarity.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3>5. &#8220;Factories Are Trying to Trick Me&#8221;</h3><p>I understand the fear. Scam stories spread quickly online. But most factories I know don&#8217;t want a quick win. They want repeat business.</p><p>&#128205; I remember a client who asked: &#8220;What if you just disappear after I pay the mold fee?&#8221; After 10 back-and-forth emails, sample videos, and on-site footage, the factory finally said, &#8220;We&#8217;ve been here 20 years. If you can&#8217;t trust that, we&#8217;re not the right fit.&#8221;</p><p>&#128161; <strong>Yes, be careful &#8212; but don&#8217;t build your partnerships on fear. Trust is still the strongest currency.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3>Final Thoughts</h3><p>Every time I walk through a factory in Yiwu, I&#8217;m reminded that it&#8217;s not machines making your products. It&#8217;s people.<br>People who care about their craft.<br>People who eat lunch together after hours of packaging.<br>People who still believe in building long-term relationships &#8212; even if they don&#8217;t speak perfect English.</p><p>If you want to manufacture in China and you&#8217;re serious about doing it right, I&#8217;ll keep sharing what I see &#8212; the raw, real version. No filters. No fluff.</p><p>Because that&#8217;s what <strong>Made Real</strong> is about.</p><div class="subscription-widget-wrap-editor" data-attrs="{&quot;url&quot;:&quot;https://www.gracefu.me/subscribe?&quot;,&quot;text&quot;:&quot;Subscribe&quot;,&quot;language&quot;:&quot;en&quot;}" data-component-name="SubscribeWidgetToDOM"><div class="subscription-widget show-subscribe"><div class="preamble"><p class="cta-caption">Made Real is a reader-supported publication. From tariffs to sanctions, U.S. politicians&#8212;especially President Trump&#8212;have pushed the idea that America must reduce its dependence on Chinese manufacturing. Trump even called it a &#8220;beautiful trade war,&#8221; hoping that higher tariffs would hurt China and bring jobs back to the U.S.</p><p>But here&#8217;s the truth that rarely makes the news:<br><strong>Tariffs may grab attention, but they don&#8217;t work the way people think.</strong></p><p>Let me explain why.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>1. China Is No Longer Just the World&#8217;s Factory &#8212; It&#8217;s the World&#8217;s Supply Chain</strong></h3><p>The old stereotype of Chinese factories as low-cost labor hubs making cheap goods is outdated. Today, China has become something far more complex: <strong>a fully integrated manufacturing ecosystem.</strong></p><p>If you walk through <strong>Yiwu Market</strong>, you&#8217;ll see thousands of stalls&#8212;but behind each product is an invisible web of nearby factories, mold makers, logistics providers, packaging plants, raw material suppliers, and skilled workers&#8212;all operating in sync. This <strong>clustered infrastructure</strong> has taken decades to build, and no country can replicate it overnight.</p><p>That&#8217;s why raising tariffs doesn&#8217;t cause U.S. companies to simply &#8220;move production to Vietnam&#8221; or &#8220;bring it home.&#8221; It&#8217;s not just about wages anymore (in fact, Chinese wages are often <strong>higher</strong> than those in many other manufacturing countries). It&#8217;s about <strong>efficiency, scale, and flexibility</strong>&#8212;and China still leads on all three.</p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>2. Tariffs Are a Tax on the Buyer&#8212;Not the Seller</strong></h3><p>What many don&#8217;t realize is this:<br><strong>Tariffs are paid by the importer, not the Chinese exporter.</strong></p><p>When the U.S. slaps a 145% tariff on Chinese goods, it&#8217;s <strong>American businesses</strong> that absorb the cost. This added expense is then passed down to <strong>retailers</strong>, and finally to <strong>consumers</strong>. According to a 2023 report by the Peterson Institute for International Economics, Trump-era tariffs cost American consumers <strong>$48 billion</strong> in added expenses between 2018 and 2021.</p><p>And did these tariffs reduce dependence on China? <strong>Not really.</strong> Imports briefly dipped, but quickly rebounded as businesses found workarounds. Chinese factories adapted by <strong>routing goods through third countries</strong>, <strong>changing classifications</strong>, or <strong>offering more customized, higher-value products.</strong></p><p>They&#8217;re used to evolving&#8212;<strong>and fast.</strong></p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>3. Chinese Factories Are Built for Resilience</strong></h3><p>Unless you&#8217;ve worked with factories on the ground, you might not realize how incredibly agile and relationship-driven they are.</p><p>I&#8217;ve collaborated with small-batch producers who can tweak a product overnight to match a buyer&#8217;s shifting requirements. During the pandemic, when global logistics were in chaos, many of these manufacturers didn&#8217;t just survive&#8212;they <strong>rebounded faster</strong> than anyone expected.</p><p>Tariffs don&#8217;t break this system. If anything, they&#8217;ve pushed factories to become <strong>more digital, more diverse in their export strategies, and even more cost-efficient</strong>.</p><p>Visit Yiwu, and you&#8217;ll still find goods at astonishing prices:<br>A Christmas tree for $5. A full tea set for $10. Even if you add a 145% tariff, the final retail price is still highly competitive. The difference? <strong>That extra cost is paid by the American consumer, not the Chinese factory.</strong></p><div class="captioned-image-container"><figure><a class="image-link image2 is-viewable-img" target="_blank" href="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg" data-component-name="Image2ToDOM"><div class="image2-inset"><picture><source type="image/webp" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_424,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_848,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_1272,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_webp,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw"><img src="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg" width="1440" height="1784" data-attrs="{&quot;src&quot;:&quot;https://substack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com/public/images/a1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg&quot;,&quot;srcNoWatermark&quot;:null,&quot;fullscreen&quot;:null,&quot;imageSize&quot;:null,&quot;height&quot;:1784,&quot;width&quot;:1440,&quot;resizeWidth&quot;:null,&quot;bytes&quot;:1308408,&quot;alt&quot;:null,&quot;title&quot;:null,&quot;type&quot;:&quot;image/jpeg&quot;,&quot;href&quot;:null,&quot;belowTheFold&quot;:true,&quot;topImage&quot;:false,&quot;internalRedirect&quot;:&quot;https://www.gracefu.me/i/164997060?img=https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg&quot;,&quot;isProcessing&quot;:false,&quot;align&quot;:null,&quot;offset&quot;:false}" class="sizing-normal" alt="" srcset="https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_424,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 424w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_848,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 848w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_1272,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 1272w, https://substackcdn.com/image/fetch/$s_!rmRV!,w_1456,c_limit,f_auto,q_auto:good,fl_progressive:steep/https%3A%2F%2Fsubstack-post-media.s3.amazonaws.com%2Fpublic%2Fimages%2Fa1475afb-d4c9-4f55-908f-9d457c6132d6_1440x1784.jpeg 1456w" sizes="100vw" loading="lazy"></picture><div class="image-link-expand"><div class="pencraft pc-display-flex pc-gap-8 pc-reset"><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container restack-image"><svg role="img" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 20 20" fill="none" stroke-width="1.5" stroke="var(--color-fg-primary)" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg"><g><title></title><path d="M2.53001 7.81595C3.49179 4.73911 6.43281 2.5 9.91173 2.5C13.1684 2.5 15.9537 4.46214 17.0852 7.23684L17.6179 8.67647M17.6179 8.67647L18.5002 4.26471M17.6179 8.67647L13.6473 6.91176M17.4995 12.1841C16.5378 15.2609 13.5967 17.5 10.1178 17.5C6.86118 17.5 4.07589 15.5379 2.94432 12.7632L2.41165 11.3235M2.41165 11.3235L1.5293 15.7353M2.41165 11.3235L6.38224 13.0882"></path></g></svg></button><button tabindex="0" type="button" class="pencraft pc-reset pencraft icon-container view-image"><svg xmlns="http://www.w3.org/2000/svg" width="20" height="20" viewBox="0 0 24 24" fill="none" stroke="currentColor" stroke-width="2" stroke-linecap="round" stroke-linejoin="round" class="lucide lucide-maximize2 lucide-maximize-2"><polyline points="15 3 21 3 21 9"></polyline><polyline points="9 21 3 21 3 15"></polyline><line x1="21" x2="14" y1="3" y2="10"></line><line x1="3" x2="10" y1="21" y2="14"></line></svg></button></div></div></div></a></figure></div><p></p><div><hr></div><h3><strong>4.
