I grew up between aisles of cardboard boxes.
The kind stacked taller than me, filled with thousands of tiny goods — crystals bracelets, earrings, rhinestones, things you’ve probably held in your hands without ever thinking about where they came from.
Those boxes had names scribbled on them in Sharpie — “Paris,” “Los Angeles,” “Dubai.”
To me, they weren’t just destinations.
They were proof that even from a small corner of Zhejiang, our work traveled the world.
My parents ran a factory. Not the kind you read about in headlines.
Ours was small, messy, human.
Neighbors would stop by with dumplings.
Orders were packed late into the night while someone’s child slept on rolls of bubble wrap.
This was the China I knew:
Not perfect. But real. And full of heart.
As I got older, I moved to the U.S. for school — and from there, I saw more of the world.
I did everything society tells me that I’m supposed to do.
I studied hard, worked hard, landed a prestigious job in downtown New York, and after a few years I found myself in a polished corner office where I could see the Statue of Liberty from my window and Wall Street just beneath my feet.
On paper, it was everything I had worked for.
But deep down, I was still that factory girl at heart — like most MIT grads I knew — endlessly curious about how things actually worked, how real businesses run, and how ideas turn into something solid.
And more than that, I was still my parents’ daughter.
Someone who found peace in building things with my own two hands, not just with numbers on a spreadsheet.
I always knew I would go back one day.
I just didn’t know when.
That moment came unexpectedly, fifteen years later.
One quiet afternoon in New York, I got a call from my father.
He told me, gently, that he had been diagnosed with cancer.
And then he asked, simply:
“Do you want to come home?”
There was no hesitation.
I said, “Yes, Dad.”
And the very next day, I booked a one-way ticket from New York to Shanghai.
That’s where the rest of this story begins.
And the quiet knowing that some things in life are meant to come full circle.
Back in Hangzhou, I returned to a world I thought I already understood — the factories, the workshops, the familiar scent of machine oil.
But this time, everything felt different.
The years abroad gave me perspective; the return gave me purpose.
Because no matter how far I had gone — from Boston classrooms to New York boardrooms — one truth quietly followed me:
Most people still don’t understand how things really get made in China.
In the West, "Made in China" is too often a punchline — a symbol of cheap labor, of imitation, of soulless scale.
People talk about price tags -as if cheapness defines value.
They talk about copying - as if creativity doesn’t exist here.
They talk about speed, and corners being cut - as if all factories are faceless giants.
But they don’t talk about Uncle Zhang, who’s been hand-sewing buttons with quiet pride for over 30 years.
Or the small family factory that makes just one product — and makes it beautifully — because that’s all they’ve ever known.
Or the factory owner who doesn’t speak perfect English, but still shows up at the train station to pick up a young brand founder — just to make them feel welcome.
They don’t talk about how a handshake still means something here, and how a shipment often depends not on contracts, but on trust.
There’s a gap — between what people think and what is real.
Between headlines and handcraft. Between perception and people.
It’s why I started Made Real.
I started this project because I believe the world deserves to see what I’ve seen —
Not just the machinery, but the humanity.
Not just the output, but the hands behind it.
Because understanding is the first step to trust.
And trust is how real things — good things — get made.
